Editor's Verdict:

Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Drums is an unlikely treasure-trove of material.  Despite being only just over ninety pages, the book introduces nearly every topic imaginable for the novice drummer.  Complete beginners will find the initial chapters particularly useful.  Here, you will learn all the basics, from stick grip to music-reading, and the book provides a number of exercises to start you off.  From here, the course moves into a lesson-format, introducing a basic concept, such as 'the repeat sign' or 'pick-ups' and reinforcing the concept with practice music.  Depending on whether you have any previous musical experience, you may find that some of this is fairly basic, but you can easily skip past it and move on to more technical material.

The most exciting part of this product, and comprising approximately a third of the book, is the extensive set of musical examples in nearly every common musical genre.  As well as the drum music for a diverse set of tracks including 'When the Saints Go Marching In', 'Chicken Wired' and 'El Ultimo Baile', you can find generic patterns and fills in a large number of styles.  These can be adapted to almost any playing situation, and will be particularly useful if you are planning on playing with a band or other ensemble. There is even a 'Special Requests' section, with patterns and fills for the Cancan, Hora, Irish Jig, Two-Step and Bunny Hop, so you need never find yourself unable to play along to an impromptu dance!

Although the instruction part of the book is aimed at beginners, this set of material makes it useful for almost any level of drummer.  The final 'Odds and Ends' section of the book will also be useful to anyone learning drumming alone, with advice on changing drum heads and being your own teacher.

For its size it may seem like an expensive book, and although it is deceptively rich in material, if you are just after musical examples you will be able to find something more comprehensive.  One flaw of the book is that it tries to do two things: provide an introduction for absolute beginners and offer lasting musical material for the improving drummer.  In reality, however, as you will improve you are likely to want to buy more music anyway.  Another thing to consider is that although the book does come with a CD, unlike many of the products in this category there is no video, either on DVD or computer software.  This means that although you can read what you should be playing and even hear how it should sound, you may miss the finer aspects of technique that can only best be communicated visually.

Some retailers offer a  book-only version of this product, however we strongly advise that you buy the CD in addition.  So if you do decide to buy Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Drums, make sure you a buying the package you want.  If you are looking for a useful introduction to playing the drums and have decided against a video or multimedia package, this is one of the stronger products available.
