Editor's Verdict:

Learn How to Play Drums: Essential Beats, Fills and Grooves is one of the better low-cost drumming DVDs available.  It won't teach you anything extraordinary, and extras such as detailed historical content and music theory are noticeably missing.  However, it covers most of the basics, and does so well. Everything from an introduction to the different parts of the drum kit to playing patterns and fills in a number of different styles is dealt with in a step-by-step and friendly way.  The style makes picking up new skills particularly easy, and as such it is suitable for novice drummers of nearly any age or level of previous musical experience.

A number of features in this DVD elevate it above many of its competitors.  On-screen drum tablature demonstrates the patterns when they are played, meaning that you learn to link a sound and its visual representation.  This is a particularly useful feature, though it is surprisingly absent from many similar products.  As with most good drumming DVDs, techniques are also demonstrated with multiple camera angles so you can see what each hand and foot is playing.  With the DVD you will also receive a password, which you can use to log onto the Icons of Rock website and receive lesson material there, though there is less here than you would expect from the online content of a more expensive product.  Still, the combination of all these features proves that the makers truly had the learner in mind when developing the course.

The main limitation of Essential Beats, Fills and Grooves is that it really is focused on the absolute beginner, and won't take you much further than this.  If you use the DVD as your main method of instruction, you will soon be moving on to more advanced content and will rapidly be looking for a more extensive and varied collection of musical material.  The DVD is also quite limited in terms of the range of styles it deals with in comparison to many introductory courses.  However, from a seventy-five minute DVD, you probably shouldn't expect much more.

Whilst there are certainly more exciting and wide-ranging products on the market, Learn How to Play Drums: Essential Beats, Fills and Grooves is a solid and affordable introduction.  If you are shopping on a budget, it is certainly worth having a look at.
