Joe Morello: Drum Method 1 - The Natural Approach to Technique is a brief and simple introduction to the basic aspects of drumming technique.  Joe Morello demonstrates the secrets behind his playing and encourages players to take a closer look at the finer points of their grip and other technical details.  The DVD is aimed at beginners.  However, compared to many other beginner-focused tuition packages, there is very little emphasis on the absolute basics: kit setup, reading music, sitting position and drum theory. There is also no specific historical content and very few pieces of 'extra-curricular' information for the curious novice musician.  This is very much a stripped-back DVD, and rarely goes further than it needs to.

A number of features of the DVD help to make it more effective as a teaching tool.  The shots of the hand movements, employing split-screen and close-up video material, make seeing exactly what is being played a lot easier.  This is also true of the slow-motion segments, which help the novice drummer to get his or her head around the more complicated patterns.  Finally, having the drum tablature on screen to depict what is being played allows you to connect the two in your mind and learn to play both by ear and from written music.  However, despite all these features, the instruction is not as tight and logically developed as many of the other drumming DVDs on the market.  At times it can veer slightly to an unlikely or unpredictable topic, and some subjects or techniques are not developed in as much detail as they could be.  As a result, it may only be after several viewings that you are able to fully pick up the skills that are taught.

As drummers go, Joe is amongst the best of them.  A superb player and accomplished performer, his experience rivals any in the business.  Therefore, the vintage footage included with this DVD will provide enjoyment for fans of jazz and the Dave Brubeck Quartet in particular.  However, teaching from the best does not always equate to the best teaching, and although the standard here is good it is not the best available.  This is also a short DVD, and given the breadth of topics that Joe tries to convey, it is somewhat lacking in depth.  The central weakness is that, whilst aimed at beginners, it is not as comprehensive as most beginners would expect and need.  If you do decide to buy  Joe Morello: Drum Method 1 - The Natural Approach to Technique because you are a Joe Morello fan, ensure that it makes up only one part of your tuition program.
