Randy van Patten: Extreme Drum Set Techniques is a solid introduction to a number of useful drumming techniques.  In two hours, Randy covers a surprisingly wide range of topics, concentrating on hand technique and playing particular grooves.  Like many similar DVDs, this course is designed to be used with a fairly large drum kit.  However, much of the material is suitable for a smaller kit or can easily be adapted, so you won't need to invest in extra equipment to make the most of what it has to offer.  Nor does it require a great deal of previous instruction, as many of the basics are covered.  However, it is important to recognize that the DVD is not suitable for absolute beginners who are likely to need more detailed introductory material including information on kit purchase and setup.  Instead, it is more geared to those who have already reached an intermediate level, or who have perhaps been away from the drums for a long time and are looking for a refresher course.

One of the main benefits of this DVD is its friendly and step-by-step approach.  Topics are introduced clearly and in a sensible order, and Randy slows each idea down so that you can see how it is played before attempting it yourself at full speed.  Randy's style is mostly informal and light-hearted.  However, whereas a teacher with an over-active sense of humor can sometimes be an intrusion, here it is balanced by a serious aim to teach.  As a result of this, Randy makes a better teacher than many of the other DVD instructors out there.  The production quality is also high, meaning you won't be distracted by difficult-to-navigate menus or poorly filmed lessons.

If this course has a central weakness it is its relatively narrow scope.  Although a considerable amount of time is spent on perfecting specific areas of technique and introducing new rhythms, the number of genres covered and the volume of practice material is small compared to many of the product's competitors. Whilst many similar DVDs come with additional written material and a play-along CD, if you buy Extreme Drum Set Techniques, you will find you need to buy your own music to put the techniques  into practice.

Randy van Patten: Extreme Drum Set Technique may be useful for the player looking for detailed instruction on hand technique and playing a variety of useful rhythms, but it is by no means a complete course.  For this, we suggest you look for a product from our Top 10.  However, if you are just looking to boost your repertoire of skills and perfect your stick technique, this DVD will cover the basics in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand way.
