Editor's Verdict:

Step One: Teach Yourself Drums
is one of the most basic drum tuition packages on the market. Aimed at absolute beginners, the course takes the learner through the initial stages of kit purchase and setup, through to playing simple rhythms on different parts of the kit. In this respect, the package is good for those with no previous musical experience, as it introduces everything from this standpoint. However, anyone who has already had tuition at any level on the drums or any other instrument will likely become frustrated.

By combining video demonstrations, written instructions, drum notation and audio examples, the producers have given the novice every opportunity to learn new rhythms and techniques in a variety of ways. This can only be a good thing, as it encourages a more adaptable and confident approach to playing, be that by ear or from notation. However, the makers have failed to exploit the possibilities that this approach offers. Rather than exploring the different methods of playing, and looking at each new skill from a variety of angles, the content is at times repetitive.

As you would expect from such a short book, there is not much actual material. Instead, the learner is expected to practice each exercise in detail. This can be beneficial, as it prevents the learner from rushing on with new exercises and skipping over more challenging material. However, it can also be frustrating for more ambitious players. In this case too, not many genres are covered compared to some of the other books on the market, and this will not suit players who want to develop versatility at an early stage.

It is important to know that another book by the same publishers, titled Play Rock Drums, is in fact exactly the same as Step One: Teach Yourself Drums. If you do decide to buy this product, therefore, make sure you do not purchase both it and its duplicate. Instead, look to see which you can find for the lowest cost, as many sellers have not caught on to the fact that they are identical! Whilst it has many downfalls, you may decide that this tuition package is right for you. It is, after all, one of the cheapest book/CD/DVD combination packages available. However, as with everything, you get what you pay for, and if you can afford it we suggest you opt for one of the products featured in our Top 10.
