Verdict: Another major flaw is that the DVD seems to be aimed at many different skill levels without fully addressing any. Complete beginners will benefit from some of the tips on practicing and keeping time, but will not be able to relate to the more complex material. Nor will they find all the introductory information that they need, regarding kit setup and basic playing technique. More advanced players will find several areas of instruction to suit their ability level, but are likely to become frustrated by the basic material. Many aspiring musicians will look to Gadd as an example of a fine musician, and for this reason the DVD will no doubt appeal to many. If Gadd has been an influence on you and your playing, then this DVD is worth buying just for the level of inspiration and confidence it will give you. However, if you don't know Gadd, this is not the best introduction. His charisma as a teacher does not match his level of skill as a performer, and perhaps this is another reason why the question-and-answer format has been used. Although he is quite good at communicating ideas, the DVD lacks the humor and passion that many other similar products are brimming with. This may not seem important at first, but when you have watched the DVD several times, you may feel differently! Steve Gadd: Up Close is not a complete drumming course, and should not be considered as necessary for drummers of any level. If you are looking for one of these, we suggest a course with a more multimedia approach, or one with a bigger and more varied selection of material. You will also want practice pieces, and possibly a play-along feature, all of which this DVD is lacking. For a select few, however, it may provide the inspiration they need to get through a practicing block and take their playing to the next level.
