Thomas Lang: Creative Coordination And Advanced Foot Technique (DVD/CD/Book) Review

Verdict: The different products available here might be a cause for confusion. As well as a combination package, which features book, CD and DVD, two separate products exist for DVD-only and book/CD-only. Currently, Amazon is offering its complete package for (bizarrely) less than its DVD-only package. This is no catch, just unusual pricing, and if you intend to buy the DVD there is no reason not to buy the full pack. Although the book/CD version is cheaper, if you have a DVD player we would advise that the seven hours of video instruction are definitely worth the extra $15. The focus of the course is clear from the title, and this is an honest description. 'Creative Coordination' here means developing key skills such as accuracy, timing and stamina, which can then be applied to any style of playing. The 'creative' part comes in later on, when Lang encourages students to apply their new-found skills to a range of music he has written. He even goes into detail, explaining his composition process, so that you can see how he is applying his abstract technical skills to his performance. This is a great idea, and helps you to think more musically about your playing. The 'Advanced Foot Technique' is another large part of the course. Here, Lang focuses on double bass playing, which may put you off if you don't play double bass. However, there is probably enough other material to keep you occupied. The whole product has been designed with the learner in mind, and comes with a host of useful features. Examples are played slowly at first, so that you can see how rhythms are constructed before you hear them at full speed. The DVD also employs multiple camera angles, so you don't miss anything. You may be wondering why Thomas Lang: Creative Coordination and Advanced Foot Technique has not received one of our top reviews. Although it is a strong product, its main failure is that it specializes too much on a set of skills without providing enough background and supporting material. It is likely to be a useful course for many drummers, but this focus means that it will not suit absolute beginners or those who are looking for a complete course. However, for those who do have previous experience and want to take their playing to a new level, Creative Coordination and Advanced Foot Technique is definitely worth looking at.
