Editor's Verdict:

Tommy Igoe: Groove Essentials is both a learning tool and a diverse library of grooves in nearly every common style imaginable. Throughout the program, the 47 grooves become gradually more difficult to master, making it perfect for drummers who are looking to improve and expand their repertoire at the same time. However, it is also possible to pick and choose which grooves you work on, using the DVD as a personal library of grooves.

The breadth of genres is the real strength of the DVD. Whilst many drummers will want to specialize in a particular genre, great drummers should be able to master all. This will not only teach you grooves in some unusual as well as common styles, but should enable you to hear how they sound, helping you when you come to improvise in different situations. The inclusion of a poster with drum notation of the grooves is a clever addition, allowing you to take your playing away from the DVD player, and remind yourself of what you have learned. If you can't read drum notation but are trying to learn, it will also give you the opportunity to compare the sound of a groove to its written form. If nothing else, Tommy Igoe: Groove Essentials is a great reference tool.

There are some weaknesses to the DVD. The production, although good, is not up there with some of the top DVDs on the market and if this is something that bothers you, you might be distracted by it. It is also quite limited in scope, focusing only on grooves and how to master them. However, within this small aim it performs very well. The method of introducing the grooves slowly and speeding up the tempo is a tried and tested method for success.

For absolute beginners, Tommy Igoe: Groove Essentials won't provide the basic tuition that you are likely to need. Whilst it offers a wide variety of grooves, and introduces them in a step-by-step and friendly way, it does not go into the details of basic technique, setting up the drum kit or mastering the rudiments of playing the drums. If this is what you are after, you might want to consider one of the more comprehensive drum tuition programs. In this series of DVDs there is a Tommy Igoe: Getting Started on Drums, which will cover all this introductory ground. There is also an additional Groove Essentials: The Play-Along CD product available, which you might want to consider, so you can practice the grooves with CD backing away from the DVD player. Overall, the series has everything you need, but you may find yourself spending a little more and buying more products than you had anticipated, in order to complete your collection.

However, anyone who is looking to expand their repertoire of grooves and gain skills while they are doing so can't go far wrong with Groove Essentials. It is great at what it does, and comes at fantastic value for money. If this is what you are looking for, we highly recommend it.
