Editor's Verdict:

Easily one of the cheapest and best value drum tuition DVDs available, Watch and Learn: Introduction to Drums will surprise you with its host of useful features.  If you have tried out a large number of tuition DVDs, you will probably have a list of features in your head that you know make learning a lot easier.  This DVD has most of them: split screen, different camera angles, close-ups, on-screen music, and a "bouncing ball" to show you which note to play when.  (If you can't picture this, just think of the words on a karaoke machine!)  You only realize how important these features are when you try a tuition program without them.  Trying to get your head around a beat without having it fully spelled out, or trying to coordinate your hands when you can't see how to fit the two together can make progress slow and frustrating.  This problem is avoided here.  You would expect some or all of these features from a premier tuition package, but you would be paying ten times as much for them.

Of course, Watch and Learn: Introduction to Drums doesn't match the very top products in this category for content.  This is limited to the basics: from kit setup to playing simple rhythms and fills.  However, in its coverage of basic content, the DVD is surprisingly comprehensive considering its short length and low cost.  If you are looking for detailed music theory or drum history, this DVD will not satisfy your needs.  Nor will it take you beyond a beginner level or introduce you to any particularly unusual styles of music.  For this, you will need a much longer lasting program.  However, this course will give you a taster, and introduce you to the key concepts of drumming.  Whether you take your learning any further is then up to you.

As with many of the longer and more comprehensive drum training packages, Watch and Learn: Introduction to Drums gives you the opportunity to play-along to a band.  This provides you with good experience, and livens up what could otherwise have been a bit of a dry course.   There are five play-along tracks; not a wide selection, but more than many similar products offer.

Watch and Learn also offer a companion book and audio CD on their website, which you can purchase in addition to the DVD or as an alternative.  There is a lot of overlapping material with the book, and the CD is simply an audio version of the DVD.  However, the different mediums give added flexibility and allow you to take your playing away from the DVD player.  The makers have clearly intended the three to be bought as a package, as there is significant cross-referencing, which is helpful if you do decide to buy them together.  And although buying the book and CD is by no means necessary, even with the added cost it is still super value for money.

One hour's drumming tuition won't make you a pro, but it might do more than you would anticipate.  If you are looking for a quick and cheap introduction to drumming, you can't go far wrong with Watch and Learn: Introduction to Drums.
